Deacon at the Council of Nicaea, then bishop of Alexandria; exiled five times for refusing to compromise with Arianism.
Why it matters
'Athanasius against the world' kept the church to the full deity of Christ; his Easter letter of 367 is the first list of exactly our 27 New Testament books.
