A brilliant, restless teacher of rhetoric converted in a Milan garden at 32 ('take up and read'). Bishop of Hippo in North Africa for 35 years.
Why it matters
The most influential theologian after Paul: grace against Pelagius, the two cities, the Trinity. The Reformers called themselves Augustinians.
